How to Fall in Love With Running (Even If You Hate It)

Running isn’t always love at first mile. Help beginners (or those stuck in a rut) shift their mindset, find the joy in running, and create habits that make it enjoyable.

I’ll be honest—when I first started running, I hated it. Every step felt hard, my lungs burned, and I swore I’d never be one of those people who actually enjoy running.

But here I am, years later, writing a running blog. So, what changed?

I learned that running doesn’t have to be miserable. It’s not about speed, distance, or suffering—it’s about finding your own way to enjoy it. If you’re struggling to like running, here’s how to turn that around:

1. Start Slow (Like, Really Slow)

The biggest mistake? Going too fast too soon. Slow it down. Walk if you need to. No one cares about your pace—just focus on building endurance and feeling good.

2. Ditch the Pressure

Running doesn’t have to be a race. You don’t have to train for a marathon or set crazy goals. Just go out and move. Make it about how you feel, not the numbers on your watch.

3. Make It Fun

Hate running? Change how you do it. Run in a new location. Listen to a hype playlist. Try a “run to coffee” day. Run with a friend. Give yourself a reward after a run. The more you associate running with good things, the more you’ll enjoy it.

4. Focus on Small Wins

Celebrate the little victories: running for 10 minutes without stopping, making it up that hill, or just showing up. Progress is progress.

5. Keep Going

The truth is, running does get easier—but only if you stick with it. One day, you’ll realize you’re not struggling as much. You’ll find your rhythm. And that’s when you start loving it.

Give running a chance.

It might just surprise you.
