Finding your running rhythm as a mom or as a new mom
Becoming a mom changes everything: your sleep, your schedule, and definitely your ability to just lace up and go for a run whenever you want. The early days are a blur of feedings, diaper changes, and trying to remember the last time you ate a real meal. And if you don't have much help, carving out time for yourself can feel impossible.
I get it. I've been there.
But here's what I've learned: You don't have to choose between being a mom and being a runner. You can be both, even if it looks different now. The key is finding a balance that works for you—one that honors your new reality and still lets you feel like yourself.
Start Small, Celebrate Often
Forget the idea of long, uninterrupted training runs (for now). The goal isn't perfection; it's progress. A ten-minute jog while the baby naps? That counts. A few strides up and down the block with the stroller? Also counts. Some days, just putting on your running shoes and stepping outside is the win.
Your Time is Whenever You Can Get It
Morning runs before the baby wakes up? Amazing, if your little one sleeps predictably. Nap-time treadmill sessions? Solid option. Evening jogs after bedtime? A great way to unwind. There's no perfect scheduled--just what works in the moment. And that might change week to week. Be flexible. My weeks are never the same and I learned to get go of the perfect schedule.
If all I have is 20 minutes, then that is what I do.
Stroller Running is a Superpower
If you have a jogging stroller, use it. It's not always easy, but it's a game-changer. The fresh air soothes the baby, and you get your miles in. Plus, pushing extra weight? That's built-in strength training!
Let Go of the Guilt
That's a big ONE!
Taking care of yourself makes you a better mom. Running gives you patience, energy, and a reminder that you are still you. Your baby needs a happy, healthy mama, and that includes making time for things that bring you joy.
Find Your Support (Even If It's Just Online)
I rely on a group of women. We are six women, mothers, full time career women, and we don't always run together but we try to support each other as much as we can.
Find a running group, an online community, or even just a friend to check in with. Accountability helps, even if it's just a quick text that says, and got out for a mile today!
Some Days, Running Won't Happen--And That's Okay
Some days, the baby won't nap, or you'll be too exhausted to even think about running. That's life right now. It doesn't mean you've failed or that you'll never get back to running regularly. It just means you rest and try again when you can.
Remember Why You Run
You run because it makes you feel strong. Because it clears your mind. Because it reminds you that you are more than just the endless to-do lists and sleepless nights.
You are still a runner. You are still you.
And one day, your little one will watch you lace up and know that their mom is strong, determined, and unstoppable. That's a pretty great reason to keep going.
Thanks for reading along. See you on the road or the treadmill.
