Running and accessories, do you really need everything?
I can't answer what exactly you need to start your running journey, but I can share what worked for me and how it felt.
I am a sucker for running gear. I am guilty and I confess. Between runner's log, watches, socks, etc., I feel like I am at a point where I know exactly what works for me and what I buy on repeat.
Yet, running can be a straightforward and low-cost activity, but having the right accessories and gear can make your experience even better.
Here are some of the things I use that works. Maybe it might not work for you, but check it out.
What is essential to me?
- Running Shoes: Proper running shoes are the most important gear. No doubt about it. If there a running store near you and they do a running test, make sure you take it. Hoka Bondi works for me and ASICS as well. But each person is different. Find what works for you.
- Comfortable Clothing: Moisture-wicking, breathable fabrics are ideal. Look for running-specific shirts, shorts, or tights.
- Socks: Running-specific socks can prevent blisters. Balegas are my go to.
- Sports Bra (ladies, you know this is important): A good sports bra provides support, support, and more support. Did I say support?
- Body glide anti chafe balm: trust me, you will thank me later.
What else?
- Hydration Gear: Depending on the distance and weather, you might need a handheld water bottle, hydration belt, or hydration vest. I've had different models like this.
- Sun Protection: Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses--Goodr are currently my favorite.
- Foam Roller: For post-run recovery and muscle soreness relief.
Then you get the optional but useful things such as a GPS watch. It is fun to have one and I have a Garmin, but if you are starting this running journey it is more than ok to use an app.
And finally, energy gels or chews--honestly, I only use them for long-distance runs to maintain energy levels.
But at the end of the day, good shoes, nice socks, make sure you are well hydrated, and go for a run.
Don't forget to follow me on @NoRunnerLeftBehind.
Thanks for stopping by.
